Travel Expenses

All participants in the Erasmus+ program receive a lump sum for their travel expenses, the amount of which depends on the distance between the internship location and the place of study (as the crow flies).

To support the sustainability of Erasmus mobilities, you may receive additional funding if both the outbound and inbound journeys are taken sustainably. Also, there is a special Interrail pass for Erasmus+ which allows you to travel for 4 - 6 days within 6 months.

If you travel sustainably, you will receive a higher lump sum. Sustainable, i.e. low-emission travel means:

  • You cover at least 50% of the outward and return journey by sustainable means of transport.
  • Sustainable means of transportation are: train, bus, carpooling (not with parents), bicycle, ferry/ship if combined with other sustainable means of transport
  • Not sustainable are: airplane, car

Travel distance Travel allowance Travel allowance Green Travel

500 - 1.999 km 309 € 417 €
2.000 - 2.999 km 395 € 535 €
3.000 - 3.999 km 580 € 785 €

ab 8.000 km 1.735 € 1.735 €

All participants must submit the “Honorary declaration for travel expenses” together with the other application documents before the start of the internship.

If you have a special need, you can receive funding for additional travel days. We assume that the need is usually covered by the travel allowance and grant - especially as the Erasmus+ grant is not a full grant, but is only intended to cover the additional costs of the stay abroad. If you nevertheless believe you have a special need, please explain the reasons for this in writing on half to one page and submit this to us with your application documents.

The Green Travel grant is very low, while the administrative expense for us is high.

Therefore:

  • We only need the Honorary Declaration. However, you must keep documents of proof for 6 years after the end of your traineeship for possible audits by us, the EU or the DAAD
  • Judge with your own common sense whether your outbound and inbound journeys really are sustainable, considering the above indications.
